Costa Rica is recognized as one of the world’s top fishing destinations with 95 world records from Costa Rica’s inland and costal waters. With two coastlines to choose from, few places in the world have waters with such varied and plentiful marine life. Costa Rica strongly believes in the preservation of its' fishing resources and encourages all bill fish and non-edible fish to be released. Costa Rica sport fishing is good all year round and the best fishing locations are based on the season that you are traveling.
The Northern Caribbean is well known for its' Tarpon and Snook while the Pacific coast is famous for record breaking Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, Wahoo and Tuna. Barra de Colorado on the northern Caribbean coast is an extensive area of wetlands formed where the Rio San Juan and Rio Colorado empty into the sea. It is an angler's nirvana where Tarpon and Snook are the main attraction, during the peak season September through April, but clandestine freshwater fishing holes and deep-sea fishing are rewarding alternatives.
While fishing is good year-round, peak seasons in the Southern Pacific, including Puerto Jimenez, Drake Bay and Golfito are during November and December while Quepos and Jaco in the Central Pacific peaks December to April. Tamarindo on the Northern Pacific has the most fertile fishing April through September.
